Pelican's debut EP from back in 2001 contained four tracks, the second of which "Mammoth" was a lumbering slab of progressive, heavy doom, and perhaps the standout track of the EP.

Years pass. They put this out, which is Mammoth but in a major key and also more produced (the untitled EP was essentially a demo but not a nasty sounding one).

That tells you all you need to know about the A side. One of their very early, very heavy tracks re recorded with more budget and all the minor sevenths made major. It works really well.

The b side, however, is not as good. It is a mash up from the cutting room floor of later albums and, while there are nice moments, it's too long and too boring. Even the ending goes on too much, while the A side's extended ending is lovely.

I don't understand the B side. They could have re recorded Mammoth verbatim or done the same with another track. As such this release is only for completionists. Shame as the unusual 10" splatter pressing and slipcase are gorgeous (of course it is, it's Hydra Head) and the A side is excellent.
